On the bright side: Mythbusters’ accident also confirms Civil War myth

In case you missed it, the Mythbusters had a small accident last week involving a cannonball, a house, and a minivan. The short version is that the secondary build team was testing whether a cannonball could breach a stone castle wall when muzzle lift (think recoil, but with a cannon) caused the cannonball to skip over the top of a hill at the Alameda Sheriff’s Department’s bomb and artillery range. The cannonball proceeded to fly through the wall of a house nearly a half-mile from the range, bounce across a few roads, and come to rest in someone’s minivan. Mythbusters has already...

Signs your football commentators suck

Alright, so Tech lost to Georgia (Again. Who let a freshman touch the Wreck?), but in order to keep my blood pressure down, I took to becoming more frustrated with ESPN’s color commentary than the game itself. (It’s a coping mechanism. I’d like to NOT have a heart attack before I’m 30, thanks.) If ever there was an illustration of all of the things NOT to do if you’re a football commentator, this broadcast was probably it. Mark Jones, Ed Cunningham: you are on notice. Seriously, have either of you actually ever called a football game before? Ok, I know...

Items for a happy dorm life: An incomplete list

About a month ago, a college-bound acquaintance asked me if I had any advice about things that would make living in a dorm a bit easier. I haven’t lived in a dorm since about 2005, but I have a pretty good recollection of some of the things that were either indispensable or that I wish I had and didn’t. Two things prompted me to post this list on my blog: 1) Tomorrow is the send-off party for new Georgia Tech freshmen from the DFW area. 2) Last weekend, I recovered my blog from my senior year of high school and...

Governor Perry to organize “day of prayer and fasting” in conjunction with hate group

It’s rare that I title posts as sensationally as I have this one, but this particular story has been pushing my buttons since I woke up this morning. So consider this one of the times where I live up to the “frustrated” part of my blog title. Rick Perry, governor of Texas, has invited the governors of each state to join him at a “day of prayer and fasting” event called “The Response” that is being held in Houston, in partnership with the American Family Association, an organization that describes itself as “a Christian organization promoting the biblical ethic of...

How to eat your veggies and cut your grocery bill

This week, the USDA released “MyPlate,” the improved successor to the ubiquitous but oft-criticized food pyramid, that visualizes thee proportions of each food group a person should consume at meals. Among the things that this new visualization reveals (but that actually hasn’t changed) is that half of the volume of each meal should be made up of fruits and vegetables. Even though this is not technically a new recommendation, MyPlate makes this more obvious, and some people are treating this information with a certain amount of surprise. In particular, the reactions I’ve seen to this have revolved mainly around “how...
