On the bright side: Mythbusters’ accident also confirms Civil War myth

In case you missed it, the Mythbusters had a small accident last week involving a cannonball, a house, and a minivan. The short version is that the secondary build team was testing whether a cannonball could breach a stone castle wall when muzzle lift (think recoil, but with a cannon) caused the cannonball to skip over the top of a hill at the Alameda Sheriff’s Department’s bomb and artillery range. Alright, so Tech lost to Georgia (Again. Who let a freshman touch the Wreck?), but in order to keep my blood pressure down, I took to becoming more frustrated with ESPN’s color commentary than the game itself. (It’s a coping mechanism. This week, the USDA released “MyPlate,” the improved successor to the ubiquitous but oft-criticized food pyramid, that visualizes thee proportions of each food group a person should consume at meals. Among the things that this new visualization reveals (but that actually hasn’t changed) is that half of the volume of each meal should be made up of fruits and vegetables.
