How a one-off rant about hair donation changed how I blog

Five years ago, I wrote what has become, by far, the most popular and most widely-read article I’ve ever written, with close to 200k unique views. My article on hair donation and why it’s not for me turns up on the first page of results for a number of Google searches related to hair donation, gets shared on social media by people I don’t even know, and stirred up the most comment section controversy this blog has ever seen. When I wrote this article, the only people who really read this blog were friends, family, and a few colleagues. I’d...

A little refresh and a bit of a new look

[UPDATE 6:12 pm]: I went ahead and pulled the trigger and now have a completely new look. It’s not wholly compatible with the old way I did things, but I’m shoehorning it in. In the process, I’ve discovered some things that have seriously changed on my hosting backend while I wasn’t paying attention that are affecting how my blog manages media (or more accurately how itĀ isn’t). I used to use Google Reader’s social sharing features for this, but since that functionality is all but gone from the service following its update (and what’s left in the API is being tacked back on by userscripts with the technical equivalent of chewing gum and twine). This has resulted in (among other things) the formerly nice-looking list of my recently shared items on the left column of my...

Backup imminent…

There is curently a mirror of my blog located at http://lamenta3.wordpress.com. I have created this mirror because the box that normally serves this (and all of the content above me in the domain) to you is having some serious cooling issues stemming from a dying heatsink fan. Never fear: the site has been backed up locally and is being served from another box, at least for the time being. That said, if you notice anything hinky, let me know–all of the server settings might not be quite right. However, I went ahead with the mirroring anyway, as the above is...
